The image of Nossa Senhora do Carmo with the Boy on her lap is one of the rare images that belonged to the collection of the old Carmelite church. We do not know under what circumstances it remained (or returned) to its place of origin, given that much of the old church's estate was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. It is considered an image of remarkable sculptural quality of French influence.
Besides this, the images of Saint Elias and Saint John of the Cross, which represent two of the main religious icons of the Order of Carmel, were also preserved. They are both made of polychrome and upholstered wood and fit the seventeenth-century Baroque aesthetic, and most certainly must have been part of a larger set of pieces, which may have disappeared in the fire that broke out in the church during the earthquake.
